MSS OSAID hosted a “White Out” Campaign on Wednesday, May 18, 2011. As a
follow-up to our Choose Your Ride display, we removed students each 20 minutes from class. Those students had their faces “whited out” and they wore black t-shirts. This students were returned to the general school population to act as ghostly reminders of what can and does happen as a result of impaired driving. A huge thank you goes out to all of the students who were willing to participate as well as to all those students who signed a committment to not drive impaired or get into the car with anyone who is impaired.

Midland Secondary School was fortunate to be able to host a Choose Your Ride event at our school on Wednesday, May 18, 2011. The school and students were all abuzz about what was going on. “A Channel” news was also there! A huge thanks to Provincial Constable Dave Hobson for organizing the event and for his follow-up with an excellent talk on the morning announcements. He also helped lead us into our first “victim” in our “white out” campaign.

The final day of CYAID 2011 brought the preview of the new MADD multimedia presentation called “Damages”. As with all MADD presentations, the impact of the victims features prominently. The difference this time is how the crash is depicted as a retrospective through testimonies in the courtroom. I believe one of the most important new aspects this presentation brings is the long term impact on the family both legally, emotionally, and financially. MADD has a very effective show here!

MSS OSAID’s own Mackenzie Brash was one of students chosen to participate in the hypnotist’s show at the final evening of CYAID 2011. There were lots of laughs as the participants experienced extreme heat, extreme cold, bad smells, good smells, aging, male childbirth, ants, and Jurassic park. Mackenzie was an awesome participant and a great sport about the whole thing. Way to go Mackenzie!

Dr. D and Mayda Reid oversaw the elections for Region 6 (Toronto area).
In region 5, MSS’s own Kabrina Duquette ran for region rep to the provincial OSAID board. Winners won’t be identified until June so good luck to Kabrina!

The final of the afternoon was Michael Akpata. He is an Afganistan war veteran and a senior constable in Windsor. His moving talk held so many words of wisdom. Like “Leadership is having the ‘Ears of Your Peers’” it is not “Likership.”
Leaders are made by the sum of their experiences.
Learn from your faults, admit them, and move on.
Most importantly, if you believe in something, you have to stand up for it!

Everyone spent a portion of the afternoon at various workshops gaining new ideas and inspiration. The workshop I attended started off with a commercial created by SADD called Invincible check it out!
There was huge amounts of sharing and hopefully we will all benefit from East to West to North and from Coast to Coast to Coast!
